大观园是《红楼梦》中贾府为元春归省而营建的一处省亲别院，后成为小说主人公贾宝玉、林黛玉、薛宝钗等人的居所。俯瞰大观园全景，以正门、正殿、大观楼为中心，其西部以林黛玉、薛宝钗等人的居所为主，东部则主要为佛寺丹房、清堂茅舍的清净之所。大观园规模宏大，殿堂楼阁、庭院馆庄、佛寺尼庵、水榭亭台、山石桥梁、绿树繁花等构筑成一座“天上人间诸景备”的园林奇观。大观园有四十余景，景色之美、结构之精、布局之巧，令人叹为观止。虽然此图未能尽显其美，但总体上勾画出了大观园的园林胜景。
大观园作为《红楼梦》中典型人物的典型生活环境，虽然是小说中虚构的园林，但它是作者曹雪芹在借鉴江南园林、北京皇家园林等基础上创造而成，充分体现了中国十八世纪上半叶的园林建筑艺术之美。

Designed for Yuan Chun’s family visitation, The Prospect Garden is a large manor villa built by the Jias. After the family visitation in the novel Hongloumeng, this garden is assigned as the residential area for the protagonists such as Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu, and Xue Baochai etc. Watching with a bird’s eye view of the Garden, its entrance gate, main hall, and the Prospect Tower stand on the axis. Houses of Lin Daiyu, Xue Baochai and those of other sisters occupy the west side of the axis, while the east side is given to Buddhist temple and Daoist retreat, a summer lodge and a straw-thatched cot. The Prospect Garden is imposing and magnificent with its large scale and elegant details. There are great halls and high towers, wide courtyards and splendid mansions, Buddhist temples and nunneries, waterside pavilions and arch bridges, gardening rocks, and various plants. All the features make the Prospect Garden an amazing wonder. Yuan Chun depicts the garden in her poem “Earth’s fairest prospects all are here installed.” There are in all more than forty sights in this garden. Its beauty, structure, and arrangement are awe-inspiring. This painting cannot fully represent the essence of the garden, but it depicts the landscape of the garden in a special way.
The Prospect Garden is an ideal setting for these ideal characters in Hongloumen. Though it is a fictitious garden in the novel, Cao Xueqin, writer of the novel, composed it by the models such as the classic gardens popular in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and the imperial garden in Beijing. It fully represents the beauty and interests of gardens during the first half of the 18th century.
The Family Visitation is an ancient ritual custom. According to it, the married wives would return to their maternal homes to see their parents and relatives.
