Being bilingual means that I can switch perfectly between Portuguese and English, and that translating has always been a natural part of family life. My mother is Brazilian and my father is English. From a very early age, on family holidays to Portugal, I found that I could be useful as a translator to my father. The ability to speak Brazilian Portuguese and English to native level as well as the ability to fit in perfectly to both those cultures is what sets me apart as a translator. Culture is a vital element of any language and an aspect that has always fascinated me. My knowledge of Brazilian culture was constructed through frequent trips to Brazil every year with my mother where I interacted with Brazilian family and friends and a year abroad to Brazil in 2011 when I did an internship at the New York Times Syndicate office in São Paulo. This has given me a priceless insight to the culture, which aids my translation of idiomatic expressions and phrases. Combined with my passion for culture and bilingual background, my language qualifications accelerated my translation ability. I have a BA in Modern Languages from the University of Bristol where was awarded a 1st in Portuguese Language Translation and won a prize from the Anglo-Portuguese Society for best Portuguese student in the country in 2012. In addition, I also have a CELTA (Certification in English Language Teaching to Adults) certificate, which I gained in São Paulo, teaching English to Brazilian students. These qualifications have aided my natural aptitude for translation. Since 2012 when I graduated, I have worked on a number of translations including feature film screenplays, a documentary, academic articles, journalistic articles, interviews and brochures.
