Sample text (50 to 200 words): WHAT MY HAPPINESS FEELS LIKE
My hand knows its way home in the dark,
Where to place itself at 10 and 2
And slide the crooks of index and pinky
Snug up to the knob of the door.
For silence, only one key is allowed
Escape from the bundle cupped in my palm.
My fingertips trace troublesome buttons
And release my dress, unbind my breasts.
It’s a familiar routine, but a pleasant one.
I whisk a dark sea of hair from the cave
In the pillow that holds your face.
My palm idly paddles the stale air
Like a fat lady’s fan in an old church.
You are the flower for which you are named.
Violeta: bright, hidden, delicate, edible,
Slender as the hands of a clock marking eleven.
I want to encircle your wrist and tell you
This is what my happiness feels like – too good
To resist. Only I know you’d say that things are not
That simple; you have the best lines.
My hands pass over the crushed velvet spread,
Sleight as sugarbirds over the savanna.
I turn to my violin to shape our geometry
Plucked from desire into the dutiful sound of love
And loneliness strung behind you on a bow.
