The US$498.00 Linux laptop
Billing itself as the home of "The World's Most Affordable Computers," Linspire, http://www.linspire.com is an extremely user-friendly Linux distribution that has carved out a niche in selling Linux machines that come with all the basic software (Web browser, OpenOffice.org, instant messaging program, gaming software, etc) pre-installed. Formerly known as Lindows until the onset of some legal troubles with a software company in the Pacific Northwest, Linspire has always been known for offering great deals on Linux machines with the pre-installed software that many users like. Now, Linspire has cracked the $500.00 barrier in laptops, offering the Linspire Balance notebook for US$498.00 through (get ready) WalMart Online, http://www.walmart.com. Yes, it's true: after you pick up some cheap toothpaste and laundry detergent at WalMart.com, you can purchase yourself a fully functional Linux laptop with a 14.1'' LCD screen, 128 meg of RAM, a 30 gig hard drive, CD-ROM drive and 4 USB ports for US$498.00. It's worth noting that for less than the cost of most proprietary CAT tools alone, you could purchase this computer (or another of Linspire's similarly affordable desktop models), put OmegaT on it, and have a nice translation-ready setup. No big surprise, WalMart.com doesn't offer international shipping, but you can visit Linspire's Products page to find other retailers that do.
