Glossy papers are available in several gradations between high gloss and silky gloss. The high-gloss quality is the most common for photo printing. This is also referred to by the term ‘glossy.’ The generated printouts are very close to the appearance and texture of conventional photo prints. Glossy papers allow a high maximum blackening, highly saturated colours, a maximum ink coverage and a high maximum density, this leads eventually to crisp contrasts. Unfortunately, these papers are very sensitive to fingerprints with their surface which looks lacquered. For this reason, you should only touch them preferably with gloved hands or consider having a non-printed handle strip on the paper during photo printing. A glossy surface hinders the applied ink from entering the paper quickly. Thus, with high quality printouts print times can be longer. While some paper manufacturers have now largely mastered the problem, others recommend the so-called unidirectional printing. In this case, printing is carried out only in one moving direction of the print head and not through backward and forward movement. Thus, printing is carried out only from the right to the left and no ink is applied at the starting point from the left back to the right. For this reason, the printer driver must be changed.
